Can you believe that 2007 was six years ago? The first iPhone was announced, Britney Spears had a meltdown, and much to the fans delight (and dismay), the last installment of Harry Potter, was released. R&B and pop-punk were the flavours of the month with Rihanna, Fall Out Boy and Justin Timberlake all releasing new music. So what were the highlights of 2007? Read on to find out!
“Umbrella” was the lead single from Rihanna’s third album ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ and has since been covered by various notable musicians. It was originally written for Britney Spears but her label rejected it and Rihanna went on to make it the hottest song of 2007. I can guarantee you that after only one listen you’ll have that addictive hook stuck in your head for days; “Umbrella-ella-ella -eh-eh”.

“Makes Me Wonder” – Maroon 5
Oh Adam Levine, how we love you, especially when you’re strutting around in a suit. “Makes Me Wonder” is the first single from Maroon 5’s second album ‘It Won’t Be Soon Before Long’. The band’s first number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart captures everything a good pop rock song should be with its funky guitar riffs and catchy melodies.

“Light Up The Sky”- Yellowcard
American pop punk band Yellowcard are still going strong since their formation in 1997. What could be just another average band, Yellowcard manage to bring something fresh to the genre with the addition of a violin. “Light Up The Sky” is an uplifting and heartfelt track which intertwines beautiful melodies and punchy guitars.

“Misery Business” – Paramore
Manipulation, popularity and boys; what’s not to love about this pop punk number? Hayley Williams delivers a fierce and honest vocal performance on the fast paced track. As all Paramore fans would know “Misery Business” has become a tradition at the band’s live shows asWilliams pulls a fan on stage during the bridge to belt out the rest of the song. I’m still waiting for my turn Hayley!

“Fluorescent Adolescent” – Arctic Monkeys
While it may not have been a chart topper,“Florescent Adolescent” is one of the Arctic Monkeys’ most popular songs. Taken from their second album ‘Favourite Worst Nightmares’,Alex Turner’s lyrics are as witty and risqué ever. “You used to get it in your fishnets, now you only get it in your nightdress”, hmmm whatever could you be referring to Alex?

“What Goes Around…Comes Around” – Justin Timberlake
Don’t deny it, everyone loves Justin Timberlake. We’re ecstatic that he has announced an Australian tour for 2014, so in the meantime lets return to ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds’. “What Goes Around…Comes Around” was considered to be a sequel to “Cry Me A River” by music critics and fans. Timberlake shows off his falsetto in this powerful ballad about betrayal and forgiveness.

“Teenagers” – My Chemical Romance
My Chemical Romancewas one of the most influential bands of the last decade and they just recently called it quits after 12 years. Their iconic song “Teenagers” deals with some tough issues such as gun violence. Gerard Way says, “It’s about a really big problem in America where kids are killing kids. The only thing I learned in high school is that people are very violent and territorial”, heavy stuff indeed.

“Irreplaceable” -Beyoncé
“Irreplaceable”, taken from Beyoncé’s second album ‘B’Day’, was the best-selling US single of 2007. Ne-Yo originally wrote the song as a country track but when presented to Beyoncé was changed to an R&B pop ballad. Praised for its catchy hook, “To the left, to the left”, and Beyoncé’s honest delivery, it has become an anthem of female empowerment.

“The Pretender” – Foo Fighters
In 2007 Foo Fighters released one of the most successful rock anthems of all time, “The Pretender”. David Grohl described “The Pretender” as “a stomping Foo Fighters up-tempo song, with a little bit of Chuck Berry in it”. The song starts with a mellow guitar intro before the drums and heavy guitars kick in to create that classic Foo Fighters sound.

“This Ain’t A Scene, It’s Arms Race” – Fall Out Boy
What better time to revisit some classic Fall Out Boy than now. Incorporating elements of funk and soul, Patrick “This Ain’t A Scene, It’s an Arms Race” sees the band experimenting with different musical styles. Lyrically the song explores the band’s new found popularity in their typical tongue in cheek way, “I am an arms dealer, fitting you with weapons in the form of words”. Somehow Fall Out Boy just never gets old!
