In focus: Living a vegan life

A happy earthling

We spoke to a very happy earthling called Alex. Originally becoming vegan due to health benefits and wanting a change, Alex says she thrives on the lifestyle and couldn’t be happier.

“I initially became vegan for the health benefits. It was an easy decision once I realized that I’d been over thinking it all along.”

“Meat, dairy and eggs never made me feel good. Fruit and vegetables were what made me feel nourished and healthy. Simple. I was sluggish all the time and constantly felt like I could fall asleep at any moment.

A vegan lifestyle is being conscious about the food you’re eating – making sure no food you eat is part of or is the product of an animal. Whilst it is not a lifestyle for everybody, Alex says it has transformed her way of thinking and living.

Whilst there are benefits and drawbacks to changing your lifestyle to being vegan, it really depends on your ideology behind eating meat and animal products – and if you’re willing to make that change to eating none of the aforementioned. Changing to a vegan lifestyle will make you conscious of everything you eat – but shouldn’t you be anyways? With more and more restaurants in cities become “vegan-friendly”, ‘going vegan’ is getting easier and easier as time goes on.

“I felt sick often and was experienced frequent migraines. My appearance was dull and lifeless. I was in the middle of a vicious cycle of binging and purging and restricting and had no idea how to make it all stop. I felt so trapped and I couldn’t be more desperate for a normal lifestyle. I had nothing to lose by taking the leap into veganism.”

“It’s been just short of a year now and I have never been happier in my life. I follow a high carb, low fat vegan lifestyle and eat mostly raw foods. My diet is abundant in fruit and veg that leave me with so much energy that I can’t imagine feeling the way I used to.”

“My skin glows, my nails and hair are strong and I can’t remember the last time I felt I needed a nap at midday. I went the whole winter without catching a cold or the flu. I am able to get out of bed at 5am to fit the most I can into my day.

“I never thought I’d be able to choose cardio over a sleep in but this lifestyle has improved my quality of sleep so much that I don’t need 11 hours of it to feel normal anymore. These are all amazing side effects of veganism but most importantly, I am happy. I’m getting fitter and healthier and stronger every single day and I am so excited for the future. “
