Her recent achievements include becoming a writer with The Huffington Post and the release of her book &#8220;Don&#8217;t Hit Me!&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Vanessa enjoys op-shopping and prides herself on looking fab for under $40, and\u00a0her head is always stuck in a book. She&#8217;s travelled, acted, written, and conquered the fashion world. With her being an &#8220;unconventional writer&#8221;, she writes when she can and must be without noise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;I\u2019ve tried various methods, writing a thousand words a day, writing in the morning and writing in the evening&#8230;I\u2019ve always been a tad envious of people who write in cafes, I could never do that \u2013 I would be far too distracted,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">There is nothing improper about wanting equal rights and respect for your own gender.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">In regards to feminism and domestic violence, Vanessa de Largie identifies as a feminist and will speak openly about domestic violence, having experienced it; which led to her self-published book, &#8220;Don&#8217;t Hit Me!&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;There seems to be more discussion in Australia about issues that effect women. We must continue to have an open dialogue about domestic violence, victim blaming, slut shaming, labelling and body dysphoria.\u00a0I\u2019m not a fan of social media but I think it has shined a light into the shadows.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">On a different note, it\u2019s great that we have now had a female Prime Minister. It\u2019s important for little girls to see a woman in that role. It enables them to dream bigger.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Growing up in Perth for Vanessa was beautiful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;..laid back, safe, pristine beaches and superb weather.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>We would go on holidays to Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River and Kalbarri.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I loved our family holidays down south.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019m glad that I\u2019m a West Aussie and Perth will always have a special place in my heart \u2013 after all it\u2019s my hometown,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">I got on a bus in Perth with no money and a suitcase full of dreams and travelled over 2000 miles to Melbourne.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Below, we sit down with Vanessa to talk about the need for feminism, and what it was like moving to the big\u00a0city of Melbourne.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Your book, Don&#8217;t Hit Me, is about domestic violence, written in &#8220;real-time&#8221;. How important has the publishing of the book been to you?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On a soul-level it\u2019s been very satisfying.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Knowing that the book has touched people, but it\u2019s not just about me trying to sell my book \u2013 I truly care about this issue.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Everyday, as an artist \u2013 I think, what else can I do to help make a difference? Domestic violence is such a secretive business and that\u2019s why it thrives \u2013 it\u2019s the elephant in the room.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0I<\/span>t\u2019s time to talk about that elephant!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I was looking through a journal and realised I\u2019d captured domestic violence in <i>real-time<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I decided to self-publish it as <b><i>Don\u2019t Hit Me!<\/i> <\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>It became a #1 Amazon Bestseller in four countries within two weeks, it went on to win<i> two <\/i>international book awards and in January of this year it was picked up by Seattle publisher &#8211; Booktrope and re-released as a paperback and eBook.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6235\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6235\" style=\"width: 513px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ezramagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/helen-mclean.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6235\" src=\"http:\/\/ezramagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/helen-mclean.jpg\" alt=\"Vanessa in 2011. Photo: Helen Mclean<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why is there a need for feminism around the world and in Australia? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So many people (both men and women) think that <i>feminism<\/i> is a dirty word.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>They associate the movement with sour old women who hate men.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I have no doubt that there are feminists that <i>hate<\/i> men but I am not one of them. There is nothing improper about wanting equal rights and respect for your own gender.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My personal interpretation of the word \u2018feminist\u2019 is being a woman (or man) who believes in gender equality in all areas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I have read essays where scholars have suggested we use the term <i>humanist<\/i> instead.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>But whilst women are treated unequally, ie: wages, employment opportunities, sexuality, advertising, \u2013 we need feminism.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">Feminism is women in focus.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I consider myself a true feminist to the bone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I respect a woman\u2019s right to choose.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>If a woman wants to be a stay-at-home-mother, so she should!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>But on the other hand if a woman wants to earn money doing sex-work or porn or stripping \u2013 I do not judge that choice either.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I support women controlling their choices, their bodies and their minds.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What has been the most important day in your life so far and how has it impacted on your decision making processes in the present?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The day my life changed, was February 23,<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a02000.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I got on a bus in Perth with no money and a suitcase full of dreams and travelled over 2000 miles to Melbourne.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>It was a spur of the moment decision after many years of procrastination. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">I didn\u2019t know a soul when I arrived in Melbourne.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019d never seen a tram before.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I remember sitting on Swanston Street with my suitcase watching them rattle pass, I was mesmerised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Those first three weeks were tough.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I had lied to my parents and told them I had money saved up.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I had nothing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I refused to lean on them or ask them for money.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>This was something I had to do myself.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">When I arrived, I lived on the streets and kept shelter at Flinders Street Station. (It was so different back then, it didn\u2019t have any of the barricading)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I would go into the pokies venues for free coffee and tea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When I went for auditions, I would hide my suitcase under a bush at the Trades Hall in Lygon Street. Oh what an experience! <\/span><span class=\"s1\">I was fortunate enough to meet an eye &amp; ear doctor who put me up at a hotel for several nights whilst I looked for share accommodation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I found a share house and a few days after moving in, I was cast in the lead role in a professional play at La Mama\u2019s Theatre. I was 22 years old.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But 2000 in general was the year that <i>everything<\/i> changed \u2013it was a series of events.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>My brother Damian died from an overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol toxicity and my mother was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Massive highs and lowest lows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6237\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6237\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ezramagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/30th.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6237\" src=\"http:\/\/ezramagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/30th.jpg\" alt=\"Vanessa on her 30th birthday. Photo: Yenny Huber.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How important is travel to you? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Extremely important.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I went overseas for the first time at age 31.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(Which I guess is quite late)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>But I made up for it \u2013 in three years I visited 17 countries and I loved every minute of it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I like leaving and arriving.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Staying in one place can cause you to become stagnant and content.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I like to keep moving forward.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I want to live indefinitely in Europe, that\u2019s my bigger picture.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I am hoping to make it a reality within the next two years. I love it over there.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Most Australian actors head to LA but I\u2019m not interested. It\u2019s Europe that speaks to my heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do you think Australia should adopt same-sex marriage?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Yes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Yes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Yes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Love doesn\u2019t discriminate and neither should our marriage laws.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What makes Melbourne a place to live for you?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I am a Perth-girl born and bred. Perth has about as much culture as a tub of yoghurt!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(Sorry West Aussies).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Melbourne is a massive hive of creativity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I feel like I\u2019ve found my tribe here \u2013 people just like me, trying to achieve similar visions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I lived in Brunswick St, Fitzroy for five years \u2013 I loved it there &#8211; cafes, bookshops, vinyl stores, vintage boutiques, and poky little bars that make great cocktails.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>My favourite place to sit in silence would be Port Melbourne Beach, I\u2019ve always felt a soul connection with Port Melbourne, I often go there to write.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For you, what defines an &#8220;Australian summer&#8221; and an &#8220;Australian winter&#8221;?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Australian Summer: The Australian Open<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(I love tennis!)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>37 degree days.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Sun-baking.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Flimsy dresses.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The smells of hot cement and cut grass.<b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Living on ham and salad sandwiches.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A really nice cold beer.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Australian Winter:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Time spent in warm cafes and wine bars in Fitzroy or Carlton.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The AFL.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>A sea of black coats walking Melbourne\u2019s rainy streets.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Where&#8217;s the best little-known restaurant in Melbourne?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Van Mai<\/i> is a little Vietnamese Restaurant in Richmond\/Abbotsford and it\u2019s a real gem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I have been going there for years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The staff are wonderful and the chilli and lemongrass dishes are to die for.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>In summer, if you get the seat for two in front of the open-aired French windows \u2013 it\u2019s very romantic\/but low key.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I love it there.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s not an expensive or five star restaurant but it has an ambience about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">To follow up on more info or to see what she&#8217;s up to next, visit her website\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanessadelargie.net\/\">www.vanessadelargie.net<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Born and bred Perth girl, writer of three books, actress and strong feminist Vanessa de Largie caught up with Ezra for a chat about life, her book and the importance of feminism in Australia.
