MUSIC – Five Indie Bands You Should Know About

Dog Is Dead

An Evolving Genre

by Melina Scarfo

Indie has become a rather vague term in music. Originally it was used to describe bands or artists signed to an independent label but that is no longer the case. Now indie has evolved into a genre which takes influences from pop, rock and alternative music. With the endless supply of new bands emerging on the internet it can be difficult to find ones worth listening to. So here are five indie bands who are the best at what they do, making feel good music which we love.

First on the list is a band called Dog Is Dead, and they have been delighting fans with their clever indie-pop tunes since 2008. After touring with bands such as Bombay Bicycle Club and developing their live sound, they released their debut album ‘All Our Favourite Stories’ in October of last year. Dog Is Dead combines uplifting melodies, choir like vocals and elements of jazz to create a joyous sound which can’t help but make you smile.

But this is not your average lo-fi, noise pop band. Lead singer Stephanie Min’s sugar coated vocals and melodies set them apart from the rest. The History of Apple Pie’s debut album ‘Out of View’ was only released in January this year but they are well on the way to making a name for themselves. Even if it is a rather long one!
